Concerned About the Safety and Profitability of Your Go-Kart Track? Whether you are opening your track for the first time or have been operating for years, Zellar Consulting's Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P.) Program can give you the written standard operating procedures and staff training you need. Since guests control the direction and speed of go-karts it is very important that employees take a very active role in track operations.

Evolution Of The S.O.P. Program Paul L. Zellar is the former Risk Manager for a large entertainment company that operated more than twenty facilities with concession go-kart tracks. Zellar managed the handling of general liability and workers compensation claims working with insurance carriers and facility general managers. He also worked with several defense attorneys in different states to defend the company in go-kart track personal injury litigation. When Zellar first began organizing the Risk Management Department of the company, he found that there were very few resources available for writing and updating go-kart Standard Operating Procedures that were specific to the equipment and the design of the track. In working with insurance carriers and defense attorneys on general liability claims and litigation, it became clear as to what written operating procedures were needed to minimize injuries to guests and increase the strength of each facility’s defense in the event of a lawsuit. These operating procedures would also make the operation of the tracks more efficient and increase throughput, as the team of track employees follows the procedures to maintain control of operations. Zellar could also see which procedures should be included in the manual to reduce the likelihood of injuries to track employees and the resulting workers compensation claims. He saw that many facilities have a much larger problem with employee injuries than guest injuries on their go-kart tracks, but do not have the tools to prevent them. Zellar could see how injuries were occurring from employee incident reports and it became obvious which operating procedures are needed to help prevent them. The other key to making the S.O.P. Program successful is to train all track employees on how to implement it on their go-kart track. The manual is worthless if it is shipped to a facility and put on a shelf in the manager’s office. There must be documented training so that all track employees know the standard operating procedures along with written reprimands for them not following them. This documentation is also essential for the facility’s defense in the event of a lawsuit, as evidence that they are actually implementing and enforcing the S.O.P. Manual. This essential program provides the entire package with a Standard Operating Procedures Manual written by Paul L. Zellar with the help of equipment manufacturers, facility managers, and defense attorneys. The training program is designed to combine classroom learning with hands-on practice sessions and role playing at the actual track with the equipment operated. Each employee is required to sign a statement that he/she did receive training on each section of the S.O.P. Manual, which will then be placed in his/her employee file. If there is an incident with injury on the track resulting from an employee not following the S.O.P. Manual, he/she must be reprimanded according to the severity of the incident and verifying documentation must be filed as well. Facilities can now have the S.O.P. Manual and training in one comprehensive program through Zellar Consulting.
